SARASOTA...RICH
IN HISTORY
Sarasota has a
wide variety of historic homes from the small tin roof clapboard
cottage to probably the best known – Ca'd'Zan, the former John and
Mable Ringling house and now part of the Florida State University’s Center
for the Cultural Arts. Other styles, such as Prairie, Craftsman,
Colonial, Tudor, etc. exist, but they are all overshadowed by two specific
styles; Mediterranean Revival and the Sarasota School of
Architecture.
Mediterranean
Revival started on the west coast and had its roots in the 1915
California-Pacific Exposition in San Diego. Bertram Goodhue
designed the California Building for the Exposition in this style
and it became the rage. It was brought to the east coast by Addison Mizner and was principally done in Palm Beach starting with the
Everglades Club and then became the required style for the large
mansions being built in the 20s.
From Palm Beach
it spread to other areas of Florida and came to Sarasota in the
mid 1920’s. There are estimated to be approximately 300 homes of
this style still in existence in greater Sarasota.
