Welcome to the Community
Some places are blessed with superb geography. Some are Meccas for arts and culture. Others have great schools, low crime and a thriving job market. All of those things can make a place great. Yet it also takes so much more, whether its childhood memories, family ties or close friends. After all, great places are as much about the feelings they evoke as the amenities they offer.
If you're unable to place Sarasota geographically - and don't worry, most people can't - it's on the gulf coast of Florida, about 50 miles south of Tampa. This is the very northern edge of what is generally considered south Florida. The hills have flattened out and the vegetation is starting to look tropical. The beaches are Sarasota's pot of gold. There are 35 miles of them, many with pure white sand. These are Caribbean-style beaches, with languid blue-green water set against palm trees.
But unlike many beach destinations, Sarasota feels like a real city. It has a colorful past, a busy downtown with sidewalk cafes, impressive residential neighborhoods and an impressive selection of cultural and social activities. The city supports its own internationally acclaimed opera company and its equally outstanding ballet company. Also in Sarasota is the Asolo Theatre, which is the nationally known rotating repertory company. In conjunction with the Asolo Theatre is the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training. This is one of the country's premier actor training programs leading to a Master of Fine Arts Degree. In addition to the Asolo and the Conservatory, Sarasota has 4 other professional theatres and in the greater Sarasota area there are also 4 community theatres. In addition to these organizations the City also operates the 1,800 seat Van Wezel Performing Arts Center. The Center provides facilities for a cross section of entertainment including Broadway tour companies, numerous philharmonic orchestras and a wide variety of productions ranging from string ensembles to rock concerts.
Besides these facilities there are also the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art with its outstanding collection of Rubens, the Ringling Circus Museum, and Ca` d`Zan, the Ringling's winter home on Sarasota Bay that has recently completed a $15 million restoration. Not to be overlooked are also the Marie Selby Gardens, the botanical garden that graces the downtown waterfront and Mote Marine Aquarium, a working research aquarium, with its shark tanks and sea life exhibits.
